Buck Season at the Cabin...

We so enjoy these few days at the cabin every time we make the effort to pack up and go!! This new  cabin takes a bit longer to warm up but once it's warmed up it's a cozy few days of hanging out with friends in our Pj's, reading books, talking long over the breakfast table, laughing and eating yummy food that we all help bring.

I used to send Dave off on this weekend of opening day (rifle) buck season but since we have a family cabin of our own we all pack up and go along! It was a bit of an adjustment not to be home with mom for these few days to do shopping, candy making and other fun Christmas preparation things but I would now hate to miss these few days in the woods with my guys!

We got one nice buck out of our pack of about eight hunters... Martina!!! Great shot!!

Packing up the food and bags has gotten easier now that the kids are older and pack there own things. I'm thankful to because we had a fun Thanksgiving day here with my family and that meant clean up, pack up all in a few short hours on Friday. I packed all our left over Turkey and other Thanksgiving leftovers and it was a huge hit for supper Saturday evening!

Sasha loves the cabin to! She was in the van Friday as I was packing it! Like an hour and a half before we left she just sat in the van! She knew we were leaving and she wasn't about to miss her ride!! The kids have fun with her and she had a blast helping the guys make a drive for deer! One time Dave was organizing a drive and as he stood there waiting for everybody to get in position here comes a few deer tearing out of the pines right in his direction! He couldn't figure it out because he was about to drive the deer in the other direction!! All of the sudden here come Sash right after those deer! So much for that drive. Thankfully they were only does..:)

We had a fit how much snow was on the ground up there compared to at home! Jonathan had to use a rope to pull our van up the hill with his truck! It was so cold and the big guys were wishing so bad they had thought to bring the snow board!

These girlies were in charge of cleaning the snow off the porch...:)

We all took our turns shooting the target for practice on Saturday. Dave had me shoot his "Old Thunder" (as he calls him) and did it ever thunder! I echoed the shot with a scream every time cause it scared me so bad!! Right on target though so we were ready...:)

Sunday we enjoyed a church service at the farmers church again. We had a yummy lunch with Jonathan making the meat on the green egg grill! We greeted more hunters Sunday evening... Papas, Mark Andrew, Matthew (PJ and Peter) and John Ervin and Anna Ruth came to join the fun.

We stayed up late playing games, reading and talking.

Monday morning was lights on long before daybreak. Dave set Jordan up and Jonathan set Justin up, both in ladder stands. Dave and I had a view of the power line on the one end. We were able to see Mark Andrew and Ashley hunting together just down from us on the power line. If looking through binoculars we could see Jonathan and Martina in a double ladder stand on the far side of the power line. It was dark when we got up in the stand!...

This was my hunting buddy!...:) The best out there...:)

He kept watch on one side and I kept watch on the other... His side was having all the action and since I was the one shooting we ended up switching spots..:)

The sunrise was breathtaking!! The weather was pretty warm. They say it was to warm for hunting but I loved it!! We were not sitting long before we had some action! The deer we coming out on the power line and we soon saw a buck. A pretty nice one. I got him in my scope and when Dave said shoot I only had his back end facing me so I didn't shoot. He went back in the woods. Soon some doe came along and he came out again. I got him in my scope again and this time I shot! He had a nice rack. High with a nice fork on the end. We think he was a six point. We high fived after I shot and gave some time before going to look for him. Once we made it down there we only found a pile of brown hair.? We looked in the pines a few times but found no other trace of him. Not sure what happened as I had my beam right on him. It was about two hundred and fifty yards down to where he was from our stand. Oh well it back up we go to hunt some more..:)

After that we saw more deer but only does.

Back at camp we met up with the big boys. Justin had lots of doe around his stand and a one horned spike. Jordan was all fired up!! He said his morning went so fast!! He could see Mark Andrew and Ashley from where he was and when they got down for breakfast he couldn't believe it was that time already! He had action all morning!! Six buck and lots of doe!! He said the bucks were all small fours except the one was a six point.  It happened so fast that he never got a shot at the six. He said he passed up the fours! I think he will be shooting from now on small or not..:)

We ate breakfast then went back out to make drives...

These two have connected so much over the past year and I love to see them have this kind of fun together!!...

They were just chatting away here...

The drive brought out some action... Matthew and Justin both got a shot at a nice big buck!! Two of them were running together. (both nice ones!) With some better coordination we would have had them both! Matthew wasn't sure how to operate his gun and Justin didn't get a good enough rest on time to make a good shot. Papa was in a stand and he didn't think fast enough to shoot as they were running past him...:) As we were out in the woods I had to wonder a few times... "Where would I rather be?" It was so much fun being out there with my guys!

We hunted our same spots Monday evening but it got much colder and was kind of raining sideways! The hot shower and hot supper mom had prepared felt amazing to my tired, cold, hungry self! Being a hunter is hard work!...:)

I slept in with my Little's yesterday morning then as the guys went out for another morning hunt. Thanks to Mom and Marilyn for looking after them on Monday while I was hunting! They love cabin time with cousins! The hunts yesterday were pretty dried up. It was cold and rainy and we cleaned up soon after breakfast was done.

It feels good to be home again today! The bags are unpacked, the laundry is caught up. The kids are back in school. Dave and I ran a few miles in Atglen this morning just to get the fresh air into our lungs. It's cold and rainy and a perfect indoor day here.

I'm thinking Christmas now!! Baskets are being made and arranged for our Horizon banquet on Friday evening. It's the most wonderful time of the year and we are enjoying every minute of it! Still need to do most of that shopping though! We pick names on both the Dienner and the Zook sides (for the children) so I have eight kids names to buy for.. Fun, Fun!!

Not sure I will fill that buck tag this year!?? I told Dave to just take the boys out hunting and I'll try again next year!...:)

Thought I'd share a bit on Jordan's pecan pie... It was way SWEET!! Think I'd leave out the sugar or use less syrup!! He ate some of it but it was to sweet for him. He is eating a bit more sweets and I keep telling him I'm starting to notice him gaining weight. He feels okay but once into the new year we will once again hunker down and take another leap for the good of his healing. It will hopefully be a leap for all of us! I started to make Kombucha tea again. I'm hoping we all start to drink this tea that is loaded with many many health benefits! Not sure how I will get my clan convinced to drink this stuff that grows mushrooms in my bedroom closet but I hope to somehow! Let me know if you have any creative ideas for me!...:)

Have a BLESSED rainy day wherever you are... Slow down and enjoy your Christmas Blessings!
